Good communication is a key component in any successful relationship and the Airman & Family Readiness Center here offers a workshop to help couples grow stronger in that area.

The A&FRC presents “The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts” over four sessions, March 2, 9, 16 and 23.

The purpose of the workshop is to promote healthy relationships that ultimately prevents violence and suicides and ensures mission readiness, according to J.J. McDaniel, the workshop facilitator.

It will highlight five categories of love: words of affirmation; acts of service; personal gifts; quality time and physical touch.

The chapel and family advocacy representation will also attend throughout the four sessions to field attendees’ questions, within their specialty.

McDaniel said he previously applied the love language principles in couples coaching and the A&FRC’s Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage workshop.

“We all communicate love differently,” McDaniel said.  “Often times, we communicate love in the love language we speak.  The common mistake made in relationships is we don’t learn the language our partner speaks.”

An example McDaniel gave was in a relationship, one person’s love language may be receiving personal gifts, while the other’s could be acts of service.  He said understanding how to speak a spouse’ love language can help prevent miscommunication and other issues.

McDaniel hopes to offer the workshop quarterly, if the first one is successful.

“We hope people will learn how to love more effectively, through the love languages,” he said.

All service members, civilians and their spouses are welcome.  For more information and to register, call 882-9060.
