EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Hispanic Heritage Month committee wrapped up this year’s activities with a Fiesta Finale at Luke’s Place here 0ct. 13.

The observance ran from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.  This year’s theme was “Unidos lo podemos hacer!  Together we can do this!"

Luke’s Place was decorated with flags from various Latin countries.  Posters with information from different Latin countries were available for viewing.  Latin cuisine was served.

Master Sgt. Liz Duran, 96th Logistics Readiness Squadron, dressed in Mariachi attire, welcomed the audience with Mexican songs.

Brig. Gen. Evan Dertien, 96th Test Wing commander, thanked the committee for organizing the month’s events and pointed out the significance of Hispanic and Latin American culture, as well as the importance of diversity among all cultures.

The general presented Shelby Simone, daughter of Jon Simone, Air Force Research Laboratory, with a 96th Test Wing coin for her poster representing The Day of the Dead.  The multi-day holiday is set aside for family and friends to remember deceased friends and relatives, while supporting their spiritual journey.  The poster was seen on flyers and handouts throughout the month.

Colored pages representing The Day of the Dead, created by children from the Youth Center, were also on display.  A local Latin band entertained the audience.

Cecil Williams, Diversity and Inclusion director, praised the committee for their hard work.

“They did an outstanding job,” he said.  “They pulled a lot of people together on base from different backgrounds to make everything happen.  I learned some things from the educational materials on display I didn’t know.  It was a great experience, one I hope to see again next year.”

1st Lt. Alessandra Sanchez, 96th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron and the committee’s project officer, hoped the Eglin community enjoyed this year’s events.

“We were happy to give the base a representation of the Latin community,” the Bayamon, Puerto Rico native said.  “We were glad to share our culture, love and food.  We appreciate everyone who came out and supported us.”
