EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Commander's Action Line is a direct line to Col. Dean R. Clemons, 96th Air Base Wing commander, for any questions, concerns, compliments or suggestions about the Eglin community.

The CAL phone number is 882-BOSS (2677). Concerns can also be sent in via e-mail at boss@eglin.af.mil

Concern:
I live directly across the water from the housing area. We often here your "Big Voice" system during tests, exercises, weather warnings and other events.
Recently, we began to hear, added to the mix, the sound of reveille, retreat (with National Anthem) and taps on a daily basis. It is quite loud. We have a number of folks living here that were surprised when it began a few weeks ago. It is audible for about one to two blocks into our sub-division.

Concern:
Why is Reveille played at 7 a.m. and Taps played at 10 p.m.? Is this new?

Concern:
I live near the base. Why do I have to hear Taps and Retreat? I don't live on base.

Reply:
I've received lots of input recently on the playing of Reveille, Retreat and Taps over Eglin's "Giant Voice" system. The comments have ranged from curiosity to outrage. I've even received a generous number of compliments on how wonderful and inspiring the music is for adults and children alike.

So, I've decided on a course of action. I'm going to fall back to what my grandmother told me. "You can't please all the people all the time." So, I'm going to please the people who enjoy the music charging them up in the morning, causing them to reflect on our national symbol in the afternoon and quietly bringing their day to an end in the evening.

To dampen what some people call noise, I have turned down the volume to those speakers that reach off base. Hope this quiets the issue and may we all live in harmony.

To recieve a response when calling the action line, leave a name, unit and telephone number. Items of general interest to the community will be answered at www.eglin.af.mil. Others will be answered by a personal response. The quickest way to resolve a problem is to talk with the agency responsible.

This gives the agency an opportunity to take care of the issue or deal with the complaint  and possibly imporve on a process. If no satification is reached dealing directly with the agency, feel free to contact the CAL. Those agencies are: 96th Civil Engineer Group at 882-4897; 96th Medical group at 883-9042; 96th Communications Group at 882-4468; and 96th Mission Support Group at 882-5850.
