Default Air Force Logo Boating safety reminder
A recent injury at one of our on-base boat launch ramps has caused us to take a closer look at some possible hidden hazards lurking just below the ramp launch surface. An Eglin member suffered a cut to his leg when he stepped down into a hole in the underwater part of the ramp. We would like to offer some precautionary information for boat launch

Default Air Force Logo PTU: 'Is it really that important?'
"Come on first sergeant, is it really that important?"I'm sure that's what people are thinking when I tell them to tuck in their shirt while wearing the physical training uniform. Yes, it is important and here's my take on it: it's a uniform. The PTU is called a uniform so it should be treated as every uniform is. Guidance on how to wear our PTU is

Default Air Force Logo Lease scams target active-duty military
The beginning of summer traditionally marks the start of the permanent change of station or PCS "season". For the military member the need, coupled with the pressure and competition from other potential home seekers, to find good housing at an affordable price, in a relatively short period of time could leave them vulnerable to housing scams.A

Chief Master Sgt. Thomas Westermeyer Got plans? Prep for active hurricane season
Hurricane season is in full swing. With an active storm season ahead of us, it's important to take some to reflect on lessons learned from previous seasons. Mother Nature can be unpredictable and ruthless in its destruction. Hurricane Agatha, the first storm of the 2010-2011 hurricane season, killed more than 150 people.Air Force bases in Florida,

Memorial Day 2010 Memorial Day calls for reflection on service, sacrifice of others
Throughout my Air Force career, I've often reflected on the meanings of service and sacrifice. I'm proud of the service and sacrifices our men and women in uniform make every day so we, and all Americans, can enjoy our many freedoms. However, when I attended the reunion of the famed Doolittle Raiders last month, I was sharply reminded of just how

Default Air Force Logo Surviving the Critical Days of Summer
In this Year of the Air Force Family, the safety of all Airmen and their loved ones is our number one priority. Each summer from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, Air Force personnel lose their lives to preventable mishaps. Statistics show that mishaps occur more often during this time of year than at any other time. This year's

Gracie, an Eglin Pet Welfare dog available for adoption, was left at the shelter during a thunderstorm after hours. She escaped the outdoor pin she was placed in by her former owners and roamed the Eglin range for three days. Pet abandonment causes problems for both the animal and the volunteers at the shelter. One can learn more about preventing pet abandonment or volunteering at the shelter by visiting www.petwelfare.net. (U.S. Air Force/Ashley M. Wright) Pet Welfare offers safe harbor for furry friends
The toy left behind brought no joy, the frigid 20-degree winter night brought no comfort, but tied to a picnic table, Eglin Pet Welfare volunteers found Hope, a Shar-pei, abandoned on the second day of the New Year. Famed "Peanuts" cartoonist Charles Schulz once said, "Happiness is a warm puppy." Surrendering "happiness" because of a deployment, a

Kayakers leave Boiling Creek and enter the Yellow River during the first-ever Kayak tour through the Eglin Air Force Base range. The five and a half mile kayak tour took 10 people down Boiling Creek and the Yellow River deep within the Eglin range. The scenic tour showed off Eglin’s unique wild and plant life. It kicked off Eglin’s week-long Earth Day celebration. (U.S. Air Force photo/Samuel King Jr.) Down by the river: a tributary trip through the Eglin range
A new tradition may have started this week with the first-ever kayak tour of the Eglin range April 19.I was initially hesitant about covering the tour. The photo imagery would be great, but juggling a paddle, an eight-pound camera, backpack and an inexperienced kayaker on a 15-foot plastic boat over water, sounded nearly impossible. I was willing
