The Tax Center here is open and offers free tax preparation services through April 17.

All service members, civilians, retirees and dependents can schedule an appointment to file their taxes.

In 2017, the Tax Center processed over 3,200 federal returns, saving Airmen and their families over $961,000 in tax preparation fees.  IRS-certified volunteers assist those customers with filing federal and state taxes each year.

The Tax Center requests customers bring identification, social security card, 2016 tax return, 2017 tax forms and bank account information to set up a direct deposit. If applicable, bring daycare provider name, address and child care expenses.

Also, eligible students should bring out-of-pocket costs for tuition, books and fees for enrollment in post-secondary education, and 1098-T forms.

Most refunds are issued within 21 days. However, due to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015, refunds containing Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit were not processed by the IRS until mid-February.

Anyone who filed before Congress extended the program can file an amendment.  The program helps people use a residential energy credit, mortgage insurance premiums, mortgage forgiveness act, and tuition and fees deduction.

Appointments are available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 to 11 a.m. and 12:30  to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays are reserved for walk-in clients.

The Tax Center is located in Bldg. 451 on N. 2nd St., Southwest of the McKinley Climatic Laboratory Hanger. For questions or to schedule an appointment, call 882-1040.
