ADULT AND PEDIATRIC PRE-OP INSTRUCTIONS

ADULT
1. The surgeon will give you the date of your procedure at your pre-surgery appointment.

2. Call 883-8854 one duty day prior to your surgery between 1430-1530 (2:30 p.m.-3:30p.m.) If your surgery is on a Monday or falls after a holiday, call the last duty day prior to your surgery date. You will be given a specific TIME to check in/show up - this is the time you are to arrive in ASU the day of surgery.

3. ASU patients are permitted to have only one individual (no children under 16) at their bedside. All other visitors or family members are required to remain in the waiting room, including any siblings. Please make day care arrangements if needed.

4. A responsible adult must escort the patient off the unit and drive them home (patient cannot drive for 24 hours). A responsible adult must remain at the patient's home and will take responsibility for the patient overnight. If the patient does not comply, the surgery can be canceled. If you are unable to find a responsible adult, please inform your surgeon prior to the procedure.

5. All labs must be drawn no sooner than 3 days prior to the procedure.

6. The day prior to your procedure, you must:
a) Call for your report time between 1430-1530.
b) DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING after midnight. This includes water, coffee, tea, candy, gum and tobacco. If you do not comply, there is a chance that your procedure will be canceled and/or rescheduled.
c) If required labs have not yet been drawn, report to lab.

7. The day of your procedure
a) Take a shower or bath the morning of surgery.
b) Do not use the following items after showering: perfume, lotions, deodorant, make-up, hairpieces and hairpins. All jewelry (to include body jewelry) must be removed. Nail polish must be removed from all fingers and toes prior to surgery.
c) Please leave any money, jewelry, valuables, and discharge medications, etc. at home.
d) Wear loose fitting clothing that will slip easily over a cast, splint, or bulky dressing and will not put pressure on the surgical site. (Button down shirts are preferred if you are having shoulder/arm surgery)
e) Contacts and dentures must be removed prior to surgery, so please bring eyeglasses, contact lenses case and/or a denture cup.
f) Bring crutches/appliances the morning of surgery.

8. Report to the second floor on the inpatient tower. Use the elevators marked "Col Adante A. S. D'Amore". Remember to bring your military ID card.

9. Your HIPPA passcode is the last four of the sponsor's social security number but backwards. Please give this number to any person you wish to be informed of your status. The hospital will not be able to release any information about you without this passcode.

10. If you have any questions regarding the surgical process or any of the above information, please call 883-9199 or 883-9393 Monday-Friday between 1100-1200 or 1430-1530.

11. After your appointment with the surgeon, bring all paperwork to the Admissions and Disposition office. (Your clinic will give you directions along with the paperwork.)

CHILDREN

1. The surgeon will give you the date of the child's procedure at your pre-surgery appointment.

2. Call 883-8854 one duty day prior to your child's surgery between 1430-1530 (2:30 p.m. - 3:30p.m.) If surgery is on a Monday or falls after a holiday, call the last duty day prior to the surgery date. You will be given a specific TIME to check in/show up - this is the time the child is to arrive in ASU the day of surgery.

3. ASU pediatric patients are permitted to have both parents at their bedside. All other visitors or family members are required to remain in the waiting room, including any siblings. Please make day care arrangements if needed.

4. A parent or responsible adult must escort the patient off the unit and remain with the patient for 24 hours. If you are unable to find a responsible adult, please inform your surgeon prior to the procedure.

7. The day of the child's procedure
a) The child may shower or bath the morning of surgery.
b) Do not allow the child to use the following items after showering: perfume, lotions, deodorant, make-up, hairpieces or hairpins. All jewelry, to include body jewelry, must be removed. Nail polish must be removed from all fingers and toes prior to surgery.
c) Please leave any money, jewelry, valuables, and discharge medications, etc. at home.
d) Have or bring loose fitting clothing that will slip easily over a cast, splint, or bulky dressing and will not put pressure on the surgical site. (Button down shirts are preferred if having shoulder/arm surgery)
e) Contacts and dentures must be removed prior to surgery, so please bring eyeglasses, contact lenses case and/or a denture cup.
f) Bring crutches/appliances the morning of surgery.
g) The child may have clear liquids (water, pedialyte) up to 2 hours before the surgery report time. If the child is breast feeding, they may feed up to 4 hours before the surgery report time. If using formula or cow's milk, they may have a feeding up to 6 hours before the surgery report time. Regardless of age, NOTHING TO EAT 8 HOURS BEFORE the surgery report time. If you do not comply, there is a chance that the child's procedure will be canceled and/or rescheduled.
