The mission of the Armament Directorate is to equip warfighters by acquiring and supporting war-winning capabilities. The Air Force Program Executive Officer for Weapons leads the organization and reports to the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquision, Washington D.C. The Armament Directorate, however, reports to the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

With primary operating locations at Eglin, Hill and Robins Air Force Bases, the Armament Directorate manages a number of joint programs and is manned by both U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy personnel. The directorate designs, develops, produces, fields, and sustains a family of air-to-ground and air-to-air munitions for both U.S. and allied nations to defeat a spectrum of enemy targets.

Programs managed include the Joint Air to Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM), JASSM-Extended Range (JASSM-ER), Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II), Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM), Small Diameter Bomb I (SDB I), Hard Target Void Sensing Fuze (HTVSF), Miniature Air Launch Decoy (MALD), Miniature Air Launch Decoy-Jammer (MALD-J), HARM Control Section Modification (HCSM), Common Range Integrated Instrumentation System (CRIIS), and the QF-16 Full Scale Aerial Target (QF-16 FSAT).
