Eglin scenes: Santa Rosa Island tower

Eglin's Santa Rosa Island tower stands tall during a sunny day in Northwest Florida. The SRI tower is a 300-foot free-standing tower located on Santa Rosa Island at TA A-13B on Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. It overlooks the Eglin Gulf Test and Training Range to the south and the Eglin land ranges to the north. This unique structure provides two important capabilities which include open-air hardware-in-the-loop testing for the development of precision-guided weapons and evaluation in real-world environments; and improved line of sight and coverage for test missions in the Gulf of Mexico. Gracie, an Eglin Pet Welfare dog available for adoption, was left at the shelter during a thunderstorm after hours. She escaped the outdoor pin she was placed in by her former owners and roamed the Eglin range for three days. Pet abandonment causes problems for both the animal and the volunteers at the shelter. One can learn more about preventing pet abandonment or volunteering at the shelter by visiting www.petwelfare.net. (U.S. Air Force/Ashley M. Wright)

Airmen honored with Bronze Star

Five Airmen from the 96th Air Base Wing were recognized for their distinguished service in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom with presentations of the Bronze Star Medal at Eglin Dec. 7. The period of eligibility for the award of the Bronze Star Medal began Dec. 7, 1941. A BSM is awarded to men and women who, while in the capacity of military service, distinguish themselves by heroic or meritorious achievement or service. The honor was even more significant as the medals were presented on Pearl Harbor Day. A sixth Airman was awarded the medal but was unavailable the ceremony. (Air Force photo/Staff Sgt.
