New 96th LRS antifreeze recycler nets big savings

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- John Cecil, a 96th Logistics Readiness Squadron vehicle mechanic and the unit's environmental coordinator, runs their new antifreeze recycler. Mr. Cecil lobbied to Eglin's Environmental Compliance branch to fund the purchase of this machine to save the base $6,000 annually in hazardous waste disposal and new antifreeze purchase costs, a "win-win" situation for both parties, Jim Reese, Eglin's pollution prevention coordinator, said. Vehicle mechanics replace 1,200 gallons of antifreeze a year in their 1,600-vehicle fleet and can produce a barrel of new specification antifreeze in one hour using this machine versus three hours per barrel using their old and now defunct antifreeze recycler.
