EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Col. Eric Pohland, 96th Air Base Wing vice commander, expresses Eglin leadership's thanks to the volunteers for their contributions to Eglin Earth Day April 19. Eglin Environmental Restoration personnel and a few of their spouses cooked hotdogs and hamburgers for more than 120 Earth Day volunteers at the 96 Civil Engineer Group's pavilion.

Eglin celebrates Earth Day
EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Thirty volunteers from the Eglin community spread 45,000 pounds of mulch over 1,500 feet of the Memorial Trail in celebration of Eglin Earth Day, April 19. The volunteers also picked up trash and spread mulch around the Trail's entrance and picnic area.

A large smoke plume rises during a prescribed burn on the Eglin reservation. Eglin wildland fire managers use four official weather forecasts to ensure the right conditions exist to help them limit the impacts of smoke at the ground level during a prescribed burn.

Red-shouldered hawk
EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The red-shouldered hawk breeds throughout the Eastern and Northeast U.S. into southern Canada. It is considered a migratory species and is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Adult hawks have a brown head, a reddish breast, a long tail and a pale belly with reddish bars. Red-shouldered hawk rescue
EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Kathy Gault, an Eglin endangered species biologist, and Kristin Smith, a Science Applications International Corporation environmental scientist, work together to rescue an entangled red-shouldered hawk in Turkey Creek March 2. A local resident spotted the bird while kayaking down Turkey Creek and reported the incident to natural resources personnel at Jackson Guard in Niceville, Fla.
