Eagles Peak
Eagles Peak, a mountain west of the Air Force Academy, is where Maj. David Garay survived a 50-foot fall while hiking as a cadet in 1997. Although bones were broken in his face, he tried to climb down to get help. The head trauma he suffered almost cost him his dream of flying for the Air Force, but he overcame it all to become a flight test engineer. (Courtesy photo)

New energy idea
The newly created Eglin Energy Management Center began a contest between three of Eglin's largest buildings to see which one could conserve the most energy for a month, beginning Feb. 11. The 53rd Wing and the 308th Armament Systems Wing, occupiers of the identical six-floor buildings, are in a "heated" competition to see how they can reduce energy cost and consumption. Results will be published and the winner will be announced in March. (U.S. Air Force photo/Samuel King Jr.)

Keeping us safe
Senior Airman William Grymes, 11th Security Forces Squadron K-9, and his military working dog Rocky, are trained to respond to acts of terrorism in the National Capitol Region defending military members and their families. Part of the offensive strategy for the antiterrorism program is a show of force. The 11th SFS takes bomb-sniffing dogs on random building checks. See accompanying feature article on Mr. Thomas Versichelli, Bolling’s antiterrorism officer, whose responsibility includes making plans that defend the base from terrorists.
