EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The library book check-out process at Hanger 3 here is complemented by technology.
Jennifer Kepple, head librarian, offered a Lunch and Learn workshop at the digital library Feb. 8, to show patrons how to obtain and download library materials online.
Kepple gave attendees a presentation and one-on-one assistance on the use of digital devices and dedicated electronic readers, to access the Eglin Information Center/Digital library’s online databases and resources.
The library contains more than 10,000 free downloadable items, including fiction, nonfiction, audiobooks, videos and music. It also includes multiple copies of the Chief of Staff of the Air Force’s 2014-2016 reading list. E-reading devices are available for checkout.
All of the databases’ materials can be downloaded for free.
The Overdrive Digital Library, one of the available databases, is compatible with multiple reading and listening devices. Patrons can also obtain a library card number to access free material from the Air Force Digital Media program, also available through the website.
“Many people don’t know we offer a digital library,” Kepple said.
Kepple said having e-reading capabilities provides an easier portable option to lugging physical books.
“The digital library is a great tool for deploying service members and travelers,” she said. “They can take it anywhere. Instead of carrying hardback or paperback books, they can access any number of digital books from anywhere in the world.”
1st Lt. Ray Salvano, Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center, said the introduction to digital reading was a great idea.
“I love my books, but every time I have a permanent change of station move, they’re heavy to pack up and take up a lot of space,” the Pittsburgh, Pa. native said. “I think it’s awesome we have a digital library, to access e-books.”
For Jaleesa McCreary, Air Force Life Cycle Management Canter, the digital library is a window to professional growth.
“I live in Pensacola. I come to work and go straight home,” said the miniature munitions financial specialist. “I don’t have time to go to Hangar 3. I want to continue to develop professionally. Through the digital library, I’m finding books and other information that will help me grow.”
Kepple said while technology can be intimidating to some, she encouraged the base community to take advantage of the user-friendly digital library and Air Force Digital Media program.
“These are great programs,” she said. “I believe patrons will discover our digital formats are easy to use. I hope they find access to digital reading is not as scary as they may think.”
The library’s next Lunch and Learn workshop is March 15 from 11 a.m. to noon. Lunch is provided free of charge. Hangar 3, located in Bldg. 825, is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 4.p.m., to all Team Eglin members age 16 and over.
