EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Welcome to the monthly mission report for the 96th Operations Group. These are the tasks Airmen and civilians are progressing on inside the squadrons and units within the group.
780th Test Squadron
Warhead testing
The squadron personnel completed two tests of the BLU-109 warhead with two explosive fill formulations. The bomb is a 2,000 pound penetrator against hardened targets such as bunkers, aircraft shelters and reinforced concrete structures.
Live fire tests
The air-to-air test flight completed live fire testing of the $120 million AIM-120 (Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile) software upgrade program. The mission involved 11 aircraft, two unique test assets and coordination between two major commands.
Temperature testing
The F-35’s PGU-47 armor-piercing explosive round underwent temperature conditioning for approximately 14.5 hours using a GAU-12 gun system. The completed test certifies the round for further F-35 flight testing.
