The 33rd Maintenance Squadron team defended their intramural football title for the third straight year, defeating the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center team 20-18 in the championship game here Dec. 14.

Ammo, who entered the matchup with an 8-3 season record, deferred the ball to EB, who finished at 9-2.

Ammo scored on their first touch in nine plays, when Akeem Williams, the quarterback, crossed the goal line from 10 yards out.  Williams’ one-point conversion pass to Adam Kale gave the maintainers a 7-0 lead.

During EB’s third possession, Scott Adler caught quarterback Brad Stallings’ 70-yard bomb in the end zone to close on Ammo, 7-6.

Ammo followed up with an eight-play scoring march before halftime.  Williams threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Michael Murphy to broaden the lead, 13-6.

Stallings wasn’t rattled, confident EB would make up the deficit.

“We had a couple of dropped balls,” Stallings said.  “If we do what we’ve done all season, we’ll catch them.”

Williams was upbeat about Ammo’s play and looked to carry the momentum into the second half.

“We have a good plan, we just have to finish strong,” he said.  “We’ll adjust to anything they throw at us.”

Ammo’s second-half opening drive was halted in two plays by an EB interception.  EB capitalized on the turnover five minutes later, as Stallings’ four-yard touchdown pass to Adler narrowed the gap to 13-12.

The defending champs scored on their next possession when Williams’ three-yard run into the end zone capped a nine-play drive with 7:31 left to play.  His one-point conversion pass to Murphy put Ammo ahead 20-12.

Next, EB used nearly five minutes to complete an eight-play drive that ended with a six-yard touchdown toss from Stallings to Cody Huggins that closed the gap to two points.

Rather than pass for another touchdown, Ammo used their ground game to run the clock out.  They won the championship and sealed the three-peat with a slim 20-18 victory.

“This wins means a lot for our squadron,” Williams said as the jubilant maintainers celebrated.  “To bring home the trophy three straight years is really special for us.”
