Eglin cop wins county police award

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. --  Tech. Sgt. Jason McWilliams, a member of the 96th Security Forces Squadron here, was recently named the 2012 Okaloosa Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.

The award is given annually to the law enforcement officer who best meets the following criteria: one or more heroic acts; high personal standards and service above and beyond the call of duty; innovation/initiative in creating a new or innovative law enforcement program; outstanding humanitarian efforts; and outstanding efforts in public safety.

"I was surprised to hear I won the award," said McWilliams, a 13-year Air Force veteran. "I heard some of the accomplishments of the local civilian law enforcement officers who were nominated, and I was surprised I was chosen."

Among his accomplishments, McWilliams was recognized for participating in more than 500 "outside the wire" missions and conducting more than 240 hours of route reconnaissance, while on a recent deployment to Kabul, Afghanistan. By memorizing more than 8,400 kilometers of terrain, he was also instrumental in ensuring the safety of key military and civilian leaders traveling through extremely hostile territories.

McWilliams is the squadron's flight chief for the midnight shift and supervises 22 personnel. He also fills in on any position he's needed.

"I'll serve as a patrolman, gate guard or ride in a security unit," McWilliams said. "I'll do whatever is required."

The Apple Valley, Minn. native said he loves his job and enjoys working at the 96th SFS.

"I like having the opportunity to make an impact on the base," he said. "We may not always be the most liked folks, but when the time comes, we're definitely needed. I get a lot of opportunity to interact with the local populace. The 96 SFS is great at taking care of its people and their families, which is something I'm glad for."
