The Company Grade Officers' Council shut out 5/6 Council 38-0, in a flag football game played here, Jan. 19.

CGOC, with only 10 players on their roster, dominated the game scoring touchdowns on six of nine possessions. The 5/6 Council squad had many new players on their squad and never found their rhythm on offense or defense.

CGOC's Andrew Massino set his team's defensive tone early, grabbing the first of his two interceptions two plays into 5/6 Council's opening drive.

Three plays later, Thomas Herold, the CGOC quarterback, hit Massino on a two-yard touchdown strike.

CGOC boosted their lead to 19-0 inside of a minute before halftime, scoring with a pitch from Thomas Herold to Jimmy Herold at the one-yard line.

The one-point conversion attempt was batted down by Mark Manning, who, along with Keith Percy and Matthew Mosko, were 5/6 Council's defensive standouts. The team stopped four CGOC conversion attempts.

For Massino, the CGOC coach, the key to victory was sticking to the game plan.

"We're going to stay with the plays we practiced this week," he said. "From there, it should all work out. We're playing great defense and sticking to our zones."

Troy Kiick, the 5/6 Council coach, urged his team to calm down and stay optimistic.

"With all these new players, we don't have the continuity the CGOC team has," he said. "We started to click towards the end of the half. We'll start putting some points on the board in the second half and start shutting these guys down."

That didn't happen.

The 5/6 Council team only saw more of CGOC's unstoppable offense, which posted 19 points in the second half with punishing drives and touchdown catches by Weed, Massino and Jessica Pitts.

Danielle Sands' one-point conversion catch at the 3:06 mark and Jimmy Herold's interception near the two-minute warning contributed to CGOC's 38-0 victory.

"We just kept putting the same pressure on them in the second half, and it worked out well," Massino said.
