"A Family's Love is Always the Best Medicine." The motto of the Fisher House Foundation has proven to be true for those who have stayed at the Fisher House of the Emerald Coast, nearing its one-year anniversary.

The Fisher House program accommodates family members to be near a loved one during a time of illness, injury or disease.

As a recent guest testified, "We are a long way from home and the Fisher House provided a place of refuge and solace during these critical days. We (family) were able to be together in one place and encourage each other."

The Fisher House provides lodging at no cost to active duty members, veterans, retirees, and their family members who are being provided medical care and treatment. Since last September, the Fisher House at Eglin has accommodated over 300 guests, saving over $125,000 in out-of-pocket expenses to the above-mentioned beneficiaries and families.

Recent evidence suggests that patients recover faster when surrounded by family providing the love, support, and understanding that only a family member can.

"Allowing family members a place of refuge, to be near a loved one, goes a very long way in the healing process," said Ron Gribble, Fisher House manager. "The Fisher House program is unique in that it involves the family as a unit--a patient's spouse, mom, dad, brother, sister, even cousins. Having family at your side during an illness does wonders for the patient and expedites the healing."

Volunteers serve in various capacities--from local fund-raisers to monthly dinners to donating needed items.

"We're so fortunate to have a dedicated and loyal volunteer base in the community," said Kim Henderson, executive director for the Fisher House, Inc. "No matter the event or the location, our volunteers always step up to the plate and give their all."

As with any non-profit organization, there are always continual needs. The website for the Fisher House of the Emerald Coast is www.fisherhouseemeraldcoast.org. On it, there are 'wish list' items for donation.
