Revamped Team Lean challenge returns in April Published March 22, 2011 By Marilyn Leggett 96th Aerospace Medicine Squadron EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Team Lean Challenge has received a facelift this year and is coming to Eglin April 11. The official theme of the newly refreshed program is Team Pedometer Challenge; the program focuses on taking the necessary 'steps' for permanent healthy lifestyle changes. The Team Pedometer Challenge involves three key elements: education, walking and participating in base fun runs/walks. These three elements help to encourage an overall healthy lifestyle approach, with attainable goals. The challenge spans six weeks allowing participants the time to introduce good health habits, build a routine and learn about nutritional education. "TPC is a program that doesn't focus solely on weight loss, but on being more active, and this was our goal," says Antoinette Greene, Health Promotion Coordinator for AFMC Surgeon General's office. The program is designed to help the command's military and civilian workforce create significant reductions in health risks by developing a healthier lifestyle. One way that AFMC promotes a healthier lifestyle is with the Health Risk Appraisal tool available at the Wellness Support Center Web site, www.afmcwellness.com. TPC begins with a simple (annual) assessment of each participant's overall health, which many participants may already have completed. The site also serves as the enrollment portal for the Team Pedometer Challenge, as well as where you enter your steps in the pedometer log. The intent of TPC is to foster the AFMC Wingman concept by encouraging participants to work together to achieve their goals. Each team will consist of two members. Once enrolled, participants should visit the Civilian Health Promotion Services office here to pick up a free pedometer. The pedometers are on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last. The objective of the TPC is for each team member to log their steps at the Wellness Support Center Website (www.afmcwellness.com), to attend three educational classes each and to participate in one fun run/walk held on base. At each AFMC base, classes will be taught by the Civilian Health Promotion Services team as well as the Health and Wellness Center team. Some of the classes include Fad Diets, Cooking with Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables, and Healthy Eating at Work, to name a few. The top three winning teams on each base will be determined by the numbers of steps taken, whether both participants attended three classes (a total of six classes per team), and if each member participated in a fun run/walk.
