First commander for F-35 training squadron takes reigns Published July 21, 2010 By Ashley M. Wright Team Eglin Public Affairs EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The first commander of the 359th Training Squadron assumed command July 16, as the unit prepares to train maintenance crews on the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. "We, like our 33rd Fighter Wing mission partners, are embarking on a new journey and a mission that must succeed," said Col. Shawn Harrison, 82nd Training Group commander. "Today, we embark on training for the next multi-role fighter, an airplane with more capability and automation than the two bicycle mechanics we trace our heritage to could have ever imagined. " The squadron falls under the 82nd Training Group at Sheppard AFB, Texas and will share resources like training equipment with the 33rd Fighter Wing here. As a new training squadron, the unit is a jointly manned with Marines, Sailors and Airmen. The exciting part of standing up the training squadron is starting from scratch in every process, said Lt. Col. Teal Clark, the first 359th commander. The end product will be maintainers sent to flight decks and flight lines worldwide to maintain the newest aircraft in the Department of Defense inventory. "We are few in numbers, but each one will have the opportunity to shape... the flightlines and flight decks of the future," she said. "Personally, I will never lose sight the Marines, Airmen and Sailors that are entrusted to my care. They are the most precious resource this country has to offer; I will try to serve them to the best of my ability." The squadron is currently comprised of 10 Marines and six Airmen. Navy personnel are expected to join later this year. Marines and Sailors are expected to attend training under the 359th Training Squadron next year, and by 2013, three different Air Force specialty codes will train at the squadron along with their Marine and Navy counterparts.
