The men and women of the 53d Computer Systems Squadron spent on of the "dog days of summer" literally with the dogs.

The 20 squadron volunteers spent time at the Pet Welfare Kennel on base July 9 "to improve living conditions for over 80 animals who call the Pet Welfare facility home," according to one of the volunteers.

Pet Welfare is a non-profit, all volunteer, no-kill animal shelter. It has been in operation since 1982 and shelters nearly 300 abandoned, stray, and homeless cats and dogs every year.

"The work we did will provide long-term improvements to the daily lives of these animals", said the event organizer and booster club president," Staff Sgt. Brandon Oxton.

The work performed by 53d CSS members included replacing kennel overhead coverings, cleaning kennels, paving a sidewalk and other general repairs and housekeeping.

"These volunteers were eager and willing to help with whatever I asked of them", said Jennifer Davis, Pet Welfare's volunteer coordinator.

This was the squadron's second visit to the facility this year. Anyone interested in volunteering at the kennel should call 678-5066.

Volunteers are needed as office staff, dog walkers, cat cuddlers and much more. To complete a volunteer application or to view animals currently available for adoption click here.
