Team Eglin took another step in the social networking realm today by launching the Team Eglin fan page on Facebook.

"Social media provides us with an additional resource to reach our warriors and their families, neighbors and the world with important information, but also showcases the base on a global level using the most popular mediums possible," said Col. Bruce McClintock, 96th Air Base Wing commander.

The page allows for two-way communication from the base to fans and permits followers to post comments and photos. The site is managed by the Team Eglin public affairs office. The office will post links to articles, news updates and other relevant information to keep personnel up to date with the people, activities and events at the largest military base in the continental U.S.

More than 400 million people actively use Facebook, according to the company's Website.

"Facebook's mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected," according to the Website. "Millions of people use Facebook everyday to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet."

This is Eglin's second foray into social networking. The installation entered the social media realm March 3 with a Team Eglin Twitter account designed to keep the base population and surrounding communities informed with the latest information concerning the base populace such as details on major events and upcoming road closures.

Twitter is a social networking site providing real time "tweets" to followers. Tweets consist of no more than 140 characters and may contain links to articles or photos.

Unlike in the past, social media sites are now accessible on computers tied to the Eglin network. Air Force officials began a two-week phased opening April 26 of access to social media sites Air Force-wide. Air Force Material Command opened social networking sites May 1.
