A plume of smoke may be visible above Eglin's ranges during a "fast cook off" test planned for Friday, May 14,  at approximately 7 a.m.

A rocket will be suspended over a 2,500 square foot pan of jet fuel sitting on a concrete slab on Test Area B-71, approximately five miles north of Lewis Turner Boulevard. The fuel will be lit and the rocket will be "cooked" until a reaction is detected. The purpose of the test is to collect data on the rocket when subjected to a sustained liquid-fuel fire.

The 46th Test Wing will be performing the test, a requirement for most munitions in development. Weather conditions will play a role in the testing and in the direction of the smoke plume.

The test will be rescheduled if there is rain or winds that exceed six miles per hour.

Community members should not be alarmed if they see a plume of smoke somewhere between 7 and 9 a.m. Response vehicles will be on site in case of an emergency. It is anticipated the test will take approximately two hours.
