The 2010 Military Spouse Appreciation and HeartLink Reunion Event took place May 7 at Luke's Place on base.

The event, once referred to as Magnolia Day attracted spouses from all over the county. Now led by the Airmen Family and Readiness Center, the event was a bit different from the past, but still effective.

"This year is unique because of the combination of adding HeartLink," said Jacqueline Thomas, Community Readiness Consultant for the AF&RC.

HeartLink, an AF&RC program, meets quarterly to provide new spouses training, information on military issues and provide resources. The 2010 Appreciation Day did much of the same and in a fun way with prizes and games.

The event began with an introduction from Master Sgt Jeff Bridgman, 96th Medical Squadron first sergeant.

"Diamonds are a ladies best friend," said Sergeant Bridgman. "So remember to look for the diamonds on our shoulders; diamonds are for First Sergeants and we're here to help."

Introduction was followed by several briefings and discussions. Finance discussed how to read a Leave and Earning Statement. Protocol discussed what to wear for events and social graces. Even Col. Bruce McClintock, 96th Air Base Wing Commander, provided a briefing and some advice.

"You're a part of the 3 C's, (communicate, cooperate, create) but I really depend on you for the communication part; communicate early and often at lowest possible level," he said. "Whatever you need, I'm here to help you."

Ms. Thomas explained that the event brought together not only Eglin spouses, but outside communities. It also brought together Air Force, Army and Marine Corps. spouses.

"We're here with the community to answer and address any concerns our spouses may have," she said. "We encourage them to take time to connect with the agencies."

Connecting seemed to be the goal for both event coordinators and spouses.

"It's a party today," said Maureen Bridges, wife to 96th Mission Support Group Commander, Col. Alan Bridges. "It's nice to be connected and have resources." AF&RC is key in informing and has done a wonderful job." "We just need to spread the word."

"I think the best thing about this event is meeting other spouses," said Kassandra Rountree, whose husband, Capt. Stewart Rountree, works for the 68th Electronic Warfare Squadron.

Key spouses also offered good insight as to what they call the "veterans" of spouses.
"Some spouses have been here two or less years," said Angela Sparks, key spouse and wife of Jamie Sparks, of the 1st Special Operations Maintenance Squadron. "They don't know the lingo and programs like this not only give them knowledge, but confidence."
The event brought many aspect of military life into focus for the new spouses.

"I really want to know what my husband is talking about when he comes home," said Sarah Cooper, new spouse and wife to Airman 1st Class Nicholas Cooper of the 1st SOS. "I'm excited about the packets they've provided, "I know I'll be able to reference it in years to come."

After a day of information and networking, fun and games, spouses attended a small celebratory graduation.

"It's encouraging because we as spouses go through a lot," said Mrs. Bridges. "We need that appreciation."
