A group of IT savvy specialists are making a difference offering computer support to the residents in the Air Force Enlisted Villages.

The volunteer group, IFalcon, with members from Hurlburt and Eglin, help the residents of the Bob Hope and Theresa Village every weekend with any computer issue they may encounter.

IFalcon began about two years ago when its founder, Nathan Peek, helped an Air Force Village resident with a computer issue and realized the problems they had weren't isolated. The whole community needed computer support.

"For many of the people in their age group, computers are a portal to another world full of information and gives them the opportunity to be closer to their kids and family," said Mr. Peek. "What tools can I give them to help them live in this new community? The tools are out there, you just have to know where to look."

When residents have problems, they list the issue in a sign-up. Every Saturday, the IFalcon crew checks the list and calls each resident.

Some of the common issues include sending or receiving e-mails, picture management or viruses.

"We are so grateful these young experts take their time to come help," said Janet Mosier, Theresa Village deputy director. "They're saving our residents a lot of money that would otherwise be spent on expensive computer experts."

With about 20 volunteers who are able to provide support, IFalcon has four weekend teams split between both villages (Each team covers half the month).

IFalcon members typically help eight to 10 people in both villages and may stay two to four hours until their issues are resolved. If the matter can't be fixed all at once, they'll schedule a return visit or give them step-by-step instructions if the problem can be fixed on their own.

"To be effective helping fix their problems, you have to be innovative," said Mr. Peek. "There may be several ways to fix the problem, but we have to keep in mind solving the issue has come at no cost to the residents."

IFalcon's effectiveness comes from the variety of experience each member brings to the group. Some are specialized with programming and software development while others focus more on the hardware.

"Because our group is diverse with different computer backgrounds, we're able to solve the various issues we face," said Master Sgt. Mark Olsen, 9th Air Force Detachment 33. "Volunteers are the key ingredients for IFalcon to help the residents."

The group doesn't take donations for their efforts but the residents express their gratitude in various ways, including cooking for the IFalcon members.

"They give our residents tips and are helping launch them into the 21st century," said Ms. Mosier. "We're very much appreciative for these young experts and hope they continue their service for a long time."

Anyone with an information technology background or a passion for computers is welcome to volunteer. For more information call Sergeant Olsen at (850) 883-2602 or e-mail him at mark.olsen@eglin.af.mil.
