The Commander's Trophy Cup was presented to AFRL for accomplishments in sports and special events here Oct. 21.

AFRL earned 1,395 points to take the award, most notably by taking first place in golf, the St. Patrick's Day Fitness Event, and second place in cross country.

Their sports representative 1st. Lt. Mitchell Kieffer, kept his unit up to date on all of the sports and special events provided by Eglin Fitness Center.

"I just wanted to do a good job and make sure people had the chance to participate in sports they like," said the lieutenant. "Sports give us the chance to interact on a fun basis and have a good time with friends."

Lieutenant Kieffer also helped in Eglin setting up cross country intramurals.

"Without Lt Kieffer's dedication and assistance, we would not have a cross country season," said Staff Sgt. Sean Gray, 96th Force Support Squadron. "He assisted us with setting up the scoring system and helped pick out trails."

To win the commander's trophy, points are received by participating in intramural and extramural sports, as well as certain special events held by the Fitness Center. AFRL placed well in most of the events, but they also participated in every event, according to the fitness center.

"AFRL is known as the 'Geek Squad', so we like to show off our athleticism every chance we get," said Lieutenant Kieffer jokingly.

This marks the first time in numerous years that the award has been given to a unit here. It was established to increase participation of sports, as well as special events, and to raise esprit de corps of the units and squadrons who participate in  sports and fitness programs.
