The Air Force Research Laboratory's Munitions Directorate won the 2009 Intramural Golf League championship here Aug. 19.

The AFRL intramural golf team won defeated the 919th Special Operations Wing team on the second hole of a sudden death playoff. AFRL's Chris James calmly rolled in an 8-foot birdie putt on the par-3 to seize the victory.

There were 16 teams that played once a week from May 6 - Aug. 19 and were divided in two divisions, the American League and National League.

The AFRL team, consisting of Dave Onuffer, Randy Anderson, Rob Mackin and Chris James, won the American League championship the week before defeating last year's base champions, the 53rd Wing. The 919th SOW were tops in the National League.

"The teams played a best-ball style tournament," said Amn. Quinton Gittens, Intramural Golf manager and fitness specialist with the 96th Force Support Squadron. "This was my first year managing the intramural golf program and I really enjoyed it."

League players were impressed with Airman Gittens' management of the program.

"All of the participating teams owe many thanks to the 96th FSS for their support of the golfers throughout the season," Fred Davis, AFRL team manager, said. "In particular Amn Quinton Gittens worked very hard to get the matches scheduled and played around the recent inclement weather."

Airman Gittens wasn't the only one to receive kudos from the players. The AFRL team manager was praised as well.

"Fred Davis has done a great job managing our team," said Onuffer. "We have some really good players in our outfit who have been playing together for a long time."

AFRL made it to the finals the last eight years and won the championship four out of the last five years.

"Intramural golf has been a great moral booster for the past 28 years," said Onuffer. "It gives me something to look forward to each week during the season and I really enjoy the competition and camaraderie."

The champions' love of the game and playing as a team has them already looking forward to next year's challenge.

"This year's season was highlighted by great sportsmanship and great play on the recently refurbished Eglin Eagle Golf Course," Davis said. "All involved can't wait for next year's Intramural golf season to begin."
