The base library has a new program to provide language skills to military members, dependents, retirees and civilians.

Beginning Aug. 13, Eglin's library offers the Rosetta Stone program to those who do not qualify for the military sponsored program license. Active Duty members can contact Ms. Ballaro for access to the online program for all 30 languages, though licenses are limited and there is a waiting list.

"We have two computers loaded with the software for German, Italian, and Spanish on our network," said Dr. Julie Ballaro Human Resource Development Chief, Budget and Programs.

According to Ms. Ballaro, the Eglin library is the only one in the Air Force with this program.

"Our audience is retirees, military dependents, and civilians primarily," said Marcia Treuter Library Director.

The library will offer the program to dependents over the age of 16 in line with their computer use policy.

The program allows members to come to the library and use the computers there to develop their language skills. Stations are equipped with headsets so users can use the voice-recording feature of the program.

"Our licenses are indefinite so we will run this program as long as we have interest," said Ms. Treuter.

She added that  a survey will be used to determine what other languages users may be interested in learning.

"We would like to expand this program in the future if there is interest and funding. This is a learning process for us and the students both," said Ms. Treuter about the program's future.

Please contact the library for information about this program at 882-5016.
