From the 'island of big surf' to the 'big peninsula,' the 96th Air Base Wing's newest command chief was quickly put to work upon arrival.

Chief Master Sgt. Tom Westermeyer, arrived May 17 from Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, where he served as command chief of the 15th Airlift Wing. Just two days later, he was already briefing his Airmen at the Air Armament Center commander's call May 19.

"I've met a lot of great Airmen already and I'm looking forward to meeting more of you," he said at the commander's call. "I'm looking forward to getting out and meeting everyone - visiting your work centers and finding out more about the area."

During both CC calls, the chief's message was to ensure the Airmen knew he was there for them.

"None of you work for me," said the 27-year veteran. "I am your command chief, I work for you. My goal is to support your efforts and ensure you have everything they need to be successful, whether it's training, communication, resources or quality of life - both at work and with your families. Every bit of my attention is focused on making you successful in your mission here and down range."

He imparted three topics he believes in and hoped Eglin Airmen could use them in their own life. They were Air Force core values, mentoring, and a positive attitude.
"Stick to the core values and life is easy," said the Ventura, Calif. native. "Also, be positive in what you do."

He also stressed continuing education.

"Learn new things," he said. "Be education-minded in all you do. Get outside of your comfort zone and grow."

Maj. Gen. Charles R. Davis, Air Armament Center commander, said he was looking forward to utilizing the chief in getting a grasp on the complexity of Eglin.

"The way I get a feel for what is happening from the one-stripers on up is from the command chief," said General Davis. "I'm dependent on the chief to help me understand those issues."

Although the chief has already jumped right in to the job, he is looking forward to some enjoyment and activity in the coming months and asked that Eglin members do the same.

"Have fun," he concluded with a smile. "That's what I intend to do during my years here at Eglin."
