December is National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month Published Nov. 19, 2008 By John Dall 96th Medical Operations Squadron EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Since 1981, December has been designated as National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, (3D Month). With the holiday season approaching quickly and with the increase of parties and family get-togethers, the possibility of having impaired drivers on the highways will be on the increase. Having little or no control on other people's actions, one can reduce the risk of becoming involved in a highway accident where drugs or alcohol is involved by: 1) not driving after drinking regardless how in control you feel, remember never drink and drive; 2) prescription medications can affect your driving ability, follow label warnings in regard to how its use will affect driving; 3) illegal drug use can impair driving besides the legal consequences if involved in a highway accident, and 4) never ride with someone who has been drinking or using drugs, and if possible, take away their keys. Ideas that will help you survive the holidays: 1) If you plan to throw a party or attend one, make sure that plenty of food is served; 2) Always have a way home if you are out; taxi, designated driver, or someone you can call to get you home safely and 3) Always think things through which means what could be the negative consequences of your actions. Remember this slogan "If you catch a buzz, catch a ride."
