Lane closures at the East gate will require some motorists to use an alternate entrance to Hurlburt Field beginning this month.

On March 25, the East Gate will be shut down to one inbound lane, allowing workers to safely install new force protection enhancements.

To help alleviate potential traffic delays caused by the gate upgrade, both lanes of the Heritage Gate, located south of Commando Village on Martin Luther King Jr., Boulevard, will be open to inbound traffic 5:30-8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday beginning March 25.
Leaders from the 1st Special Operations Security Forces Squadron are requesting commuters plan their morning commute carefully during the closure, because Heritage Gate will not be open to all vehicles, and there will be some restrictions on those entering through the East gate.

"Traffic coming north from the Lovejoy Road area will continue to use the East gate because they will not be allowed to cross the median on Martin Luther King Jr., Boulevard to enter Heritage Gate," said Tech. Sgt. Parrish Hollingsworth, NCOIC of the 1st Special Operations Security Forces Squadron's police services. "Traffic coming from Commando Village and the Crestview area will use Heritage Gate."

Drivers can help avoid delays at either gate by using both lanes and merging after the identification check, Sergeant Hollingsworth said.

1st SOSFS is also discouraging the use of Golf Course Road for running and other physical training activities in the morning due to the increased number of vehicles using the road while Heritage Gate is open.

The inbound lanes at the East gate will be closed one at a time to install pop-up barriers similar to the ones at the main gate.

The lanes are expected to remain closed through mid April.
