Local sportsmen participating in Eglin Air Force Base's 2008 Commander's Hunt bagged more than $6,000 for the Air Force Enlisted Village, a non-profit charity that provides a home for the surviving spouses of enlisted service members.

The hunt, held Jan. 26 and 27 on the Eglin Range, was a great success, said Maj. Gen. David Eidsaune, Program Executive Officer for Weapons and Air Armament Center commander, at the check presentation ceremony held here Feb. 12. "We had about 190 hunters at this year's event, and in addition to the fun and camaraderie of the hunt, we were able to raise a good bit of money for a great charity."

Bruce Hagedorn, Eglin Natural Resources Branch supervisory biologist, and his staff provided guides and transportation for the hunters to ensure an event as safe as it was entertaining. He also cited the support from the Alabama Air National Guard, who shared their dining facility with hunt participants.

Jim Binnicker, Air Force Enlisted Village President and CEO, expressed his appreciation at the check presentation.

"We appreciate the donation, but just as important, we appreciate the thoughtfulness behind this donation," said the former chief master sergeant of the Air Force. "It represents an attitude that runs deep throughout our Air Force ... the attitude that 'we take care of our own.' Team Eglin does this and more and we appreciate their superb support."

Binnicker was also the 9th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force.
