Anyone who uses the East Gate to access the base should pay special attention starting Aug. 6.

Drivers can expect to see construction equipment as permanent barriers are installed in both the entry and exit lanes leading to the East Gate. Major delays are expected in both the inbound and outbound lanes of traffic during the construction.

Starting Aug. 6, drivers entering Eglin's East Gate will have a choice to make. Drivers will be able to veer right onto Old State Road 10 in Valparaiso. Signs are being posted to let drivers know that the turn to State Road 10 is just ahead. State Road 10 route will lead to the alternate East Gate. This road leads behind the Naval School Explosive Ordnance Disposal. The alternate gate is for inbound traffic only. The gate will be open from 5:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., Monday thru Friday and closed on weekends and holidays.

Drivers may also continue to enter through the traditional route on Highway 20 to John Sims Parkway west of Lewis Middle School. Once entering the East Gate, drivers will need to take an immediate right onto McCarthy Ave. and detour onto the base from there.
Drivers are highly encouraged to use the West Gate to avoid traffic congestion. That gate is open 24 hours.

The contract for barrier installation is until Oct. 31.
