EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – The Phoenix Fitness Center, formerly known as the Main Fitness Center, partially reopens for strength and conditioning March 24.
The room and equipment not damaged by an early Christmas Day fire received a thorough deep-cleaning and inspections by the 96th Test Wing Safety Office, 96th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department, and 96th Medical Group Bioenvironmental Engineering.
“We are excited to be reopening a portion of the Main Fitness Center after the fire. We have aptly renamed this room ‘The Phoenix’ as a symbol of this section rising from the ashes following the fire,” said Lt. Col. Laura Evans, 96th Force Support Squadron commander. “We are thankful to the CE, fire, bioenvironmental, public health, and safety teams who have worked with us tirelessly to ensure this portion of the facility is safe for our community. We are excited to get people back into the facility and open The Phoenix’s doors.”
This portion of the Phoenix Fitness Center features cardio equipment, free weights, and plate-loaded equipment. However, no restrooms, showers or water fountains are available inside the facility. Lockers are available but are limited in size and not for long-term use. Patrons are also encouraged to bring their own water bottles. The entry is located on the southeast side of the building to the left of the facility’s main entrance.
Five portable restrooms will be located near the entrance, and indoor restrooms are available in the Legends Sports Grill lobby. Showers are located at the Field House near the East Gate shopette.
The Phoenix Fitness Center hours are Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be no 24/7 access available.
The Lightning Fitness Center is open and manned Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Field House Fitness Center is open and manned Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Lightning and Field House Fitness Centers continue to have 24/7 access.
