A team from the Enterprise IT and Cyber Infrastructure Division here played a vital role in the development and launch of a new artificial intelligence tool recently.

The Pentagon introduced GenAI.mil to personnel Dec. 9.

“The GenAI.mil platform releases AI capabilities to three million personnel across the department,” said Maj. Gage Egierski, lead program manager, Department of the Air Force Artificial Intelligence. “It will ensure cybersecurity protection for AI tools and reduce workloads by providing frontier models from leading AI companies like Google, OpenAI, Anthropic and xAI.”

For the Hanscom AFB-based division, it’s the latest in a series of services aimed at modernizing operations.

Launch day marked an important milestone for Egierski and his team.

“It was exciting to observe the platform go online and become available to all users and leadership,” he said. “Our Enterprise IT team worked proactively to ensure the seamless delivery of the service without interruption.”

Egierski described the launch as both a technical success and a testament to effective operational planning and interagency cooperation.

“This was a significant collaborative effort across Air Force organizations, including teams within the Cyber and Networks Directorate, along with many other departments,” Egierski said. “The initiative was spearheaded by the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office and its AI Rapid Capabilities Cell, whose leadership was crucial in navigating the complex technical and logistical challenges of a large-scale deployment.”

With the initial launch complete, Egierski said his team is focused on integrating additional capabilities.

“We plan to introduce future capabilities based on department priorities and user feedback, and will continue adding new foundational model providers throughout the year,” he said.

Visitors to the site will find that what's available now is a specialized version of the Google AI tool Gemini, Gemini for Government. This version is approved to handle controlled unclassified information. A green banner at the top of the page reminds users of what can and can't be shared on the site.

Access to the site is available only to personnel with a common access card and who are on the War Department's nonclassified network.

The tool reminds users to double-check everything it provides to ensure accuracy.

For those unfamiliar with how to use AI, online training is available at https://genai.mil/resources/training.
