Commissary begins charging for single-use bags

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. – The Defense Commissary Agency begins charging customers for single-use bags April 6.

Bags will be available at 5 cents per plastic bag and 10 cents per paper bag in store and online through Commissary CLICK2GO.

Customers using self-checkout lanes will be prompted to input the number of bags used at the end of their order. Bags used for pickup or delivery orders will be included in the total, and the number used will appear on the receipt.

The bag price will be added to the total purchase amount along with DeCA’s surcharge to the total amount of the order. The surcharge helps fund store maintenance, construction, and modernization and is set by law.

Customers are encouraged to bring reusable bags with them to avoid the charge. Patrons can provide them at the register at the start of checkout, and baggers will be available to bag purchases. Customers can also indicate they have reusable bags in the notes section of the CLICK2GO order.

If customers forget to bring, or do not have, reusable bags, DeCA has them for purchase in the store.

DecA’s funding comes through direct appropriations, and the change is an effort to direct funding towards their intended purpose like subsidized food costs and services.
