EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- The Summer Reading Program kickoff party began at the Digital Library May 31.  This year’s theme is “Reading Takes You Everywhere.”

More than 100 Eglin community children of all ages signed up to participate in the three-year-old program.

“Our goal is to keep children reading throughout the summer,” said Jennifer Kepple, head librarian.  “We want to make sure by the time go back to school in August, they’ve kept up with their reading, and they feel comfortable at their reading level.”

Children can choose the books they read, at any reading level they wish, Kepple said.  Their parents can read to them or they can read independently.

They will log their reading minutes on the library’s website.

The library offers weekly incentives and rewards to encourage reading.

The program features multiple events throughout June and July, including story times; science, teaching, engineering, math hours, games and crafts.

“We’re happy to do our part to help with children’s literacy, during the summer,” she said.

Signups are ongoing.  Interested patrons can register at the library or online.  Volunteers are welcome.  For more information, call 882-9308.
