MedGroup's hot bats help rout 780th 22-3

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. --  The 96th Medical Group dominated the 780th Test Squadron scoring 18 runs in the first inning during an intramural softball game here August 12. The rout ended early in the fifth inning with a final score of 22-3.

The Med Group's masterful first inning began with Ethan Cross roping a line drive to right center field bringing in three runs. Phillip Parrish, co-coach, and centerfielder, homered also in the inning.

At one point, Orlando Torres, the Med Group's short stop said, "We have batted around three times."

The Med Group's additional runs came in the second inning.

The first 780th run came in the bottom of the second inning when Josh Cerri legged out an inside-the-park home run. The teams remained at 22-1 until the fourth inning.

"We got lucky in the first inning and now they can't catch us," said Timmy Chapel.

With the score so lopsided, under the "skunk" rule the teams switched batting order in the fifth inning. The 780th TS was able to pick up a couple more runs, but the lead was just too much to overcome.

"It was a great day," said Mathew "Tater" Maples, 96th MDG team coach. "I'm proud that our team played well."

The 780th TS was missing several of its players contributing to the team's woes.

"It has been impressive we fielded a team every game of the season," said Garret Duff, 780th TS team coach, searching for a silver lining.

Intramural softball games are played Monday-Thursday from 5-7 p.m. The season ends Aug. 25 and the playoffs for the base championship begin.
