Water bottles in place. Bike seats and handle bars adjusted. Cleats locked and one with the pedals. Legs pound emphatically in a circular motion to classic rock and techno tunes. Puddles of sweat quickly form beneath the exercise bikes. This is Eglin's indoor cycling class known as Spin.

Spin's success and longevity here is due to the drive and dedication of a small group of civilian volunteer spin instructors.

"I started teaching spin because the classes were so popular," said DeAllen Hobbs, spin instructor. "I wanted to provide alternate class times to give more people a chance to do spin, so they could experience the joy and health benefits that spin gives me."

According to Hobbs, the low-impact, cardio-intense workout strengthens the heart without over working the joints. Spin is a complete body toning workout that builds physical and mental endurance.

During the indoor cycling session, spin goers can expect a challenging, low impact, high energy, heart pounding stationary bike ride.

"I love spin, because it is easy on my knees and burns from six to eight hundred calories," said Suk Cannon, who attends Eglin's early morning spin class. "I like the high tempo. The music is good and the instructors are awesome; each has an individual way of teaching spin that gets you going."

Classes vary by instructor and are open to participants of all fitness levels.

"Spin is what you make it. You challenge yourself," said Hobbs.

All that's needed to spin is a t-shirt, a pair of shorts and a pair of tennis shoes. Using resistance and speed, spin classes simulate a bike ride through different types of terrain or a sprint race to the finish. Participants can also expect a wide range of music and a dose of motivational coaching.

"One of my goals as an instructor is to motivate my participants in hopes that one day they will come in behind me and also teach spin," said Hobbs.

Spin class is held at the main fitness center Monday through Thursday at various times. For information, call 882-2302 or log onto the Force Support web page for a complete schedule of spin classes.
