Badge of honor
EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Officer Mike Bearden, an Eglin Department of the Air Force security guard, wears a black band with a blue strip over his badge to honor two Okaloosa County Sherriff Deputies who were killed in the line of duty April 25. The black of the band signifies the death while the blue strip signifies it was a police officer. Law enforcement agencies wear the a badge, shield or star as a sign of respect and honor. Deputy Warren "Skip" York, one of the officers killed, retired from the Air Force as a member of the 96th Security Forces Squadron, Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. He served with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office for six years. He is survived by his wife and children. Deputy Burt Lopez was also a retired military servicemember.
