Voice Network Systems

Senior Airman Michael Detwiler and Airman 1st Class Logan Robbins, of the 96th Communications Squadron’s voice network systems, measure the acid level in a backup battery with a hydrometer June 6 at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. The levels for more than 65 of the backup batteries for the base’s telephone switches must be checked quarterly. Two people are required to accomplish this task and protective gear is necessary for safety. The 22 Airmen and civilians within voice network systems branch are responsible for the maintenance and preservation of more than 18,000 bases phone lines. Their contributions combined with the other branches and flights led to the 96th CS earning the 2013 Maj. Gen. Harold McClelland best large communications work center award for Air Force Materiel Command. (U.S. Air Force photo/Samuel King Jr.)
