Beginning March 1, the active-duty sick call option will no longer be available at Eglin Hospital.

Previously, the Family Health and Family Medicine Clinics provided Active Duty sick call daily from 6:30 to 8 a.m., for ill and injured Airmen to receive treatment.

"The intent of sick-call was to care for those unable to work that day," said Maj. Erika Ceranowski, Family Health Clinic flight commander.  "However, it has morphed into something different.  Our research shows we were losing money and access to care with the program."

This was due to the time not being used or being used inappropriately, according to the major.

"Our beneficiaries are better served by converting and opening up those times for appointments," said Ceranowski.

A sick or injured Airman's options are:
Home care
The nurse advice line (883-8600)
Call for an appointment (883-8600)
A telephone consult to a nurse (883-8600)
Emergency room visit
The clinics are letting their patients know of the change and are providing guidance to base leadership on the new policies.

An important regulation for supervisors to know about active-duty sick status is AFI 41-210.

It states that unit commanders and supervisors have the authority to grant up to 24 hours of sick status to their Airmen if the member does not require immediate treatment.  If the illness persists longer than 24 hours the Airman must seek treatment.
