Runners celebrate Memorial Day at the Gate-to-Gate Run
Team Eglin Public Affairs
5/31/2011 - EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Approximately 1,939 runners, walkers, disabled athletes participated in the 29th annual Gate-to-Gate Run here May 30. The event is an Eglin tradition dating back to 1985, when now retired Lt. Gen. Gordon Fornell, former Armament Division commander, proposed a run as a way to keep Airmen on base for Memorial Day due to the rise in injuries and fatalities involving Airmen. Traditionally, the run went from gate to gate but was recently modified for safety reasons. The runners participated in the event ranging from ages eight to 87.
Matt Dobson, ran away with the fastest time of the day (24:21) to finish as the overall male winner. The win was Dobson's fourth since he began running the race in the early '90s. Pasca Cheruiyot won the women's overall division with a time of 25:18.
