Golf course transitions from public to private

The Eglin Golf Course transitions from a public to a private course Dec. 9, restricting its use to authorized patrons and their guests.

Authorized patrons include active duty, reserve, retired military members; military dependents; DoD civilians and contractors, as well as personnel who meet criteria in accordance with Attachment 2 of AFI 34-101, Air Force Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Programs and Use Eligibility.

Members of the public are still welcome to utilize the course; however, they must be accompanied by an authorized patron to play.

Air Force golf courses are morale, welfare and recreation activities provided to enhance the mental and physical well-being of Air Force members and their families. Golf services can be offered to the general public, but only with the concurrence of local civilian golf courses within a 10-mile radius of an installation’s course. This Air Force-mandated process is reviewed every two years to ensure services are mutually beneficial to the installation and community golf entities.

Eglin’s public course status was due for a renewal this year.  It received non-concurring feedback from the required local golf entities. In an effort to support local concerns and abide by regulations, this change will remain in effect until further notice.

The 96th Force Support Squadron leadership said it plans to work with community golfing partners toward establishing a mutually beneficial means for Eglin Golf Course to regain its public course status. Until then, the squadron will work toward a smooth transition for non-DoD-affiliated guests.
