The realignment of the Eglin hospital official began June 28 with a ground-breaking ceremony of the 96th Medical Group's new medical facility annex.

The annex, located behind the hospital's emergency room entrance, will consolidate the administrative offices into one location leaving more space in the main wing.

"We want a world-class facility for our patients," said Col. Gary Walker, the 96th MDG commander. "We are excited about the opportunities this realignment provides for us."

The renovation will cover 145,000 square feet of space and is scheduled for four major changes over the next two and a half years. More than 35 moves will occur within the main hospital facility over that time.

The four major changes are:
  • New emergency room and the administrative office relocation
  • Medical specialty clinics and lab renovation
  • New Aerospace Medicine Squadron building and new women's health and pediatrics clinic
  • Surgery clinic additions and renovations
According to Walker, the hospital accommodates more than 250,000 patients per year.

"These changes aren't based on need, but a projected growth of this facility and area," said special guest, Lt. Gen. Charles Green, Surgeon General of the Air Force and former 96th MDG commander. "This base is home to the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines and we're going to take care of them all."
