In an effort to raise breast cancer awareness, Eglin held the Breast Cancer Awareness Month 5k Run at the 96th Civil Engineer Pavilion, Oct. 16.

The purpose of the event, hosted by the 96th Force Support Squadron, was to spread the word about the importance for self examination to catch the disease in its early stages.

"The sooner that it's caught, the easier and less expensive it is to treat," said Kathy Halliday-Fields, 96th Aerospace Medicine Squadron. "This is why we are encouraging women to self-test at least once a month."

The HAWC also handed exam cards which could be hung in the shower to help remind them.

Eglin's Health and Wellness Center provided awards to the top male and female runner, door prizes and a drawing to all who signed-up for a 30-minute massage.

More than 300 runners participated in the event. Capt. Scott Griffith, Operational Flight Program Combined Test Force, and Paula Piazza, 96th Medical Operations Squadron were the first male and female to finish the run with a time of 15:58 and 18:54, respectively.
