EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- In 2009, an Army Ranger team visited an Air Force maintenance unit in Bagram, Afghanistan.
“They told our maintainers the close air support generated by our aircraft directly saved their lives during an intense firefight. That moment fundamentally changed how I saw my job,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jonathan Allison, 96th Maintenance Group.
On Sept. 9, 2026, a team from the 6th Ranger Training Battalion visited the 96th MXG for a program called “Crew Chief for a Day.”
“This integration program was created to give our young Airmen and visiting Rangers that exact same realization I had much early in their careers, without needing a combat zone to teach it,” said Allison.
The Ranger team of E-4 Specialists, learned about the duty of an Air Force maintainer and what it takes to maintain and launch an F-16 Fighting Falcon and an F-15C Eagle.
