Spring is a time of renewal, when Mother Nature sprouts life from dormant twigs.  It's also a time for people everywhere to renew their commitment to better the environment. Earth Day is April 22, and the Air Force theme this year is "Conserve Today, Secure Tomorrow."

"We have a number of opportunities for the Eglin community to get involved and make a difference this Earth Day," said Brian Kelly, Eglin Earth Day coordinator. "We're looking for volunteers to help us with two restoration projects on Wednesday, and then we'll follow that up with a barbecue lunch for all the volunteers."

One of the events is repairing the nature trail at Timberlake Pond. A team of approximately 15 volunteers are needed to clear overgrowth and reinforce erosion on the trail.

Another opportunity is to help with a clean-up project on Eglin reservation behind the University of Florida Graduate Engineering Research Center off Lewis Turner Boulevard.

On April 20, an Earth Day golf tournament will be held at the Eglin Golf Course beginning at noon at a cost of $40.

To register for either of the volunteer projects, contact Erica Laine at (850) 883-1177.

For those interested in participating in the golf event, contact Ron Hickman at (850) 882-1805.
